This book arises from case studies and two back-to-back workshops held in Cotonou, Benin in November They were the combination of much experience and knowledge gathered in the West Africa region and were brought about to explore the concept of poverty, especially how it is a part of the life of fishing communities and our ways of thinking about resolving the issue. The Common Fisheries Policy increasingly has recourse to multi-annual plans which often combine different management tools. Fisheries management is based on data and scientific advice, and control measures to ensure that rules are applied fairly to and complied with by all fishermen.

Historical perspectives of the Small Scale fisheries sector Marine living resources have been harvested for consumptive use, livelihoods, medicinal purposes and as part of cultural and spiritual practices for centuries along our coastline and evidence of marine resource use by indigenous (and local) coastal communities exists along. Small-scale coastal fisheries, especially for small stocks of relatively sedentary species, are increasingly seen as candidates for still-novel governance arrangements such as adaptive co-management.

Managing Small-scale Fisheries looks beyond the scope of conventional fishery management to alternative concepts, tools, methods, and conservation is, for example, broader emphasis on ecosystem management and participatory decision-making.

Interested readers will include fishery managers, both governmental and nongovernmental; instructors and students in. Human dependence on marine and coastal resources is increasing. Today, small-scale fisheries employ 50 of the world’s 51 million fishers, practically all of whom are from developing countries.

And together, they produce more than half of the world’s annual marine fish catch of 98 million tonnes, supplying most of the fish consumed in the developing world. This book focuses on small-scale fisheries in developing countries: the people who fish, their communities, and the linkages within and outside the fisheries systems. Chapers address the following issues: key concepts in fisheries management.

Small-scale fisheries make up a large proportion of world's fisheries, both by catch and participation. Effective management is essential to ensure access to fish for food and income.

Specifically, it demonstrates the importance of livelihoods, fisher knowledge, resilience, and institutions in fisheries management and planning; and develops a draft fishery management plan using the Management Objective Driven (MOD) fishery.

This paper provides an analytical framework for the management and development of coastal small-scale fisheries in developing countries. In a brief review the basic management concepts developed for single-species fisheries are presented and their appropriateness is examined for the management and development of small-scale multi-species fisheries.

In recent decades, there has been a shift in small-scale fisheries management from centralised government systems to more decentralised approaches, including the local communities [1] [2] [3][4.

This book will help a new generation of scientists, policy-makers, and small-scale fisheries actors make the fundamental connections between different disciplines in science, traditional knowledge, and policy to guide a collective process towards sustainable small-scale fisheries.

The book contains an inspiring collection of practical cases. There are few simple solutions for the problems that fisheries science and management address anywhere in the world.

This is particularly so for small-scale fisheries, which this book is primarily about. However, fresh perspectives, methods, and approaches offer new opportunities for small-scale fisheries management.

As a result, there is a growing push to include them in fisheries management—to understand how much is caught, which species and where.
